NCRCD Tree Seedling GIVEAWAY

The Nevada County Resource Conservation District (NCRCD) is giving-away FREE reforestation tree seedlings to our community.

These seedling plugs are being provided by Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) in an effort to save them from disposal due to limited storage capacity. These trees need to go in the ground ASAP.

We will have ~1,000 seedling plugs available on a first-come first-serve basis at 113 Presley Way in Grass Valley. Meet us in the NCRCD parking lot between 10:00am - 2:00pm on Wednesday, May 27th or Thursday, May 28th .

You can take as many seedlings as you can plant. These conifer species are native to the Sierra Nevada bioregion. Planting instructions will be provided with the seedlings.

Tree Seedlings AVAILABLE:

  • Sugar Pine (~200)
  • Ponderosa Pine (~400)
  • White Fir (~200)
  • Douglas Fir (~150)
  • Giant Sequoia (~75)

Tree Planting Instructions

(for reforestation seedling plugs)

BEFORE YOU PLANT

·       Keep seedling plugs in the baggie until ready to plant in a pre-dug hole.

·       Seedling plugs come with a nutrient packet included, which provides fertility in the early stages of tree growth and supports healthy root development.

·       Tree seedlings start small but can grow to be 100+ feet in height and multiple feet in diameter.

·       Please plant in an appropriate location for the mature tree size.

DO NOT PLANT:

·       Close to FOUNDATIONS

·       Close to or on top of SEPTIC TANKS

·       Close to or on top of SEPTIC LEACH FIELDS

·       Close to SIDEWALKS or DRIVEWAYS

·       Under POWER LINES

·       On SERPENTINE SOILS

TREE SPECIES (sun requirements)

·       Sugar Pine (more sun than shade)

·       Ponderosa Pine (full sun)

·       White Fir (50% sun, 50% shade)

·       Douglas Fir (more sun than shade)

·       Giant Sequoia (more sun than shade)

PLANTING GUIDE

1.       Scrape duff layer from soil surface to expose mineral soil (18” x 18” square)

2.       Remove top 2” of mineral soil

3.       Dig a planting hole 10” - 12” deep

4.       Remove one seedling at a time from the baggie

5.       Bury seedling straight down in center of hole

6.       Cover to ½" - 1” above root collar (to prevent exposing roots when soil settles)

7.       Tamp soil firmly with boot on two sides

TREE CARE

·       WATER, if possible, to help seedlings get established during the dry summer months

·       Be careful not to expose the root collar during watering activities

·       For coarse and sandy soils, watering 2x per week is recommended

·       For other soils, 1x per week is sufficient
