Alta Sierra Elementary School - Erosion Control Project

In June 2012, the Nevada County Resource Conservation District (NCRCD) met with Alta Sierra Elementary School regarding their erosion problem at the bottom of their playground area.

The soil beneath the main asphalt playground area was eroding down a very steep hillside due to water runoff, lack of adequate drainage, and a bare slope below the area.  The NCRCD determined that the hillside was severely eroding below the playground and needed a retaining wall to stop further erosion, a drain pipe behind the wall to alleviate any further water runoff, and bark needed to be spread across the slope to further stabilize the hill.

This Erosion Control project began on July 12, 2012 and was completed on July 18, 2012.

In addition, the NCRCD provided the school with literature on erosion as it related to the project to share with the students, and an online lesson plan for the Alta Sierra teachers regarding erosion.
