Annual Farm Day

September 20, 2018, will mark Nevada County Ag in the Classroom's 4th Annual Farm Day at the Nevada County Fairgrounds! With the support of the Nevada County Fairgrounds CEO & staff, Nevada County Farm Bureauand Bear River & Nevada Union FFA students, Farm Day is a collaboration of ranchers, farmers, agriculture teachers and students, businesses, food networks, and community volunteers who provide quality agriculture-related education.  This event is open to all 2nd and 3rd graders in Nevada County!

The benefits of Farm Day are many, and lasting.  It introduces children to different types of agriculture in an era when our children are increasingly disconnected from how food is grown and how it gets from the farm/ranch to their plates.  Homemade meals have been replaced by highly processed, convenient foods and although fresh, local foods are being grown right next door and are readily available, they are not being widely used in homes and schools.  Exposing your students to different experiences will expand their comprehension of the world that surrounds them.

It is surprising how many children don’t have a full understanding of where their food comes from!  By attending Farm Day, students will see firsthand how their favorite foods are grown and raised and exposes students to a wide variety of contrasting tactile experiences.  Fine motor skills are developed as students thresh their own wheat, spot and pick-up “insects”, race to put together irrigation pipes, or feel the softness of just-cut saw dust from a mobile sawmill.  As the students move from station to station and touch different things, their little minds will process information at alarming rates.  Being active is not only fun, it also promotes a healthy lifestyle!

I hope you will consider bringing your class to Farm Day.  It’s a wonderful place for little eyes, hands, and minds!  Please call (530) 798-5530 for more information.  Space is limited so please register your class soon.  Click here to register your class to attend.

The 2017 event was made possible by the Nevada County Ag in the Classroom participants, Nevada County Fairgrounds, and generous donations from these LOCAL businesses & organizations:
